40°C iron-rich pool. Wear a DARK swimsuit — the water permanently stains light fabric rust-orange. Free for guests; go early morning or evening to beat the day-trippers. Two hotter pools are hidden in the garden.

Pots go in at 5 AM and cook 6–8 hrs in the volcanic ground with no fire. The noon retrieval is the spectacle.

The twin crater lakes, one blue and one green. Arrive before 9 AM — 20-min parking limit, fills fast, fog is common.

Easy 1.2 km trail for a second angle on the crater. Fewer people, windy — bring a layer.

Mid-June–Sept it's shuttle bus only, 9 AM–7 PM, €5 pp, no private cars. A 30-min path runs from the upper viewpoint to the lake. Check the webcam — mist is common.

The world's largest collection of maritime paintings — sailors paint their boat before crossing the Atlantic, and leaving without one is said to bring bad luck. ~1,500 boats a year. Optional swim at the basalt natural pool.

~25 min from Horta. Loop trail PRC04, 6.8 km, ~2.5–3 hrs, moderate. The rim sits at 840–1040 m and clouds move in fast — check conditions. Going into the crater needs a permitted guide.

The youngest volcano in the Azores (erupted 1957–58) — alien ash fields and a half-buried lighthouse. The underground Interpretation Center is excellent (~1 hr, €10, daily 10–6). Start at the far viewpoint, then the museum. Loose sand and wind — wear sturdy shoes.

Black-sand beach near Capelinhos, worth a stop at the western tip.

Check in at Casa da Montanha (1,200 m), Caminho Florestal nº9, Candelaria. Ticket GOC-T130660521. ~7–9 hrs round trip, ~1,150 m of ascent. The final 70 m (Piquinho) is an optional scramble. The descent is harder than the climb — go slow. 47 numbered poles mark the trail; stay on them in fog.

Order 10948, departs Lajes do Pico. The original Azores operator (1989). ~99% sighting rate — sperm whales year-round and dolphins; July may bring blue, fin, or humpback whales. Bring binoculars, camera, and footwear that can get wet; jackets provided. Back ~12:30.

Thousands of lava-stone currais shelter the vines from wind and salt spray — a working 500-year-old system, inscribed in 2004. Best along the coast road between Madalena and Lajes; stop anywhere that looks good.
